Summary
Godrun (Goderu[n]) litteprot had a house in Winchester TRE.Profile
Godrun (Goderu[n]) litteprot had a house in Winchester TRE and was presumably a burgess. Her property may have stood on quite a large plot, since c. 1110 four men lived there and paid the large rent of 29s. Her byname litteprot has been regarded as a hybrid of OE lytel (‘little’) and OFr prod (‘advantage, profit’), a nickname for which there are some parallels elsewhere (Winton DB: pp. 35 no. 13a, 159, 212–13). Alternatively, the second element in the byname might be OE prūt (‘proud, arrogant’), interpreted as the OFr word when the survey of c. 1110 was compiled.Bibliography
